SMALL BATCH La Jolla
A celebration of beauty. A celebration of greatness.
On the cliffs above the sparkling Pacific Ocean, about 10 miles north of San Diego, rests a small town named La Jolla. Spanish for 'The Jewel', its beauty is not easily described. Rugged cliffs meet the water while the twinkling lights of the city beckon from the south. To the west, an endless horizon and some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Resting above the ocean and abutting the magnificent cliffs lies one of the most challenging golf courses in the world, Torrey Pines.
Accessible to all and difficult for all, Torrey has played host to the PGA Tour for over 50 years. More recently, it has also become a favorite stop for the USGA, playing host to the classic U.S. Opens of 2008 and 2021.
So many incredible moments have happened here at Torrey — from a major victory after 91 holes on a broken leg, to Jon Rahm's scintillating U.S. Open win in 2021, along with his very first tour win in dramatic fashion.
These moments of personal greatness created some of the most iconic 18th green celebrations in our game’s history. Small Batch La Jolla pays homage to the great championships celebrated on these cliffs.
The Head
This timeless classic is known for its sleek shoulder and bumper design and much more squared profile from address. We spent time studying every aspect of both our San Diego design and our old small batch favourite, Santa Monica.
Our design goal was to create an old, trusted friend that has stood the test of time and weathered some of golf’s greatest battles. We wanted it to feel like it was formed by years of use, and in some ways softened by the erosion of the wind and sea that have made the cliffs of La Jolla what they are.
We spent time softening each radius while keeping the crisp and more tailored look of this design intact. Looking closely at the edges of the bumpers and shoulders you’ll see the softness we sought. Every part of this classic design invites touch. The hosel is now slightly inset from the top line, a nod to a classic that has won many times. The hosel stem itself has been softened like the rest of the body.
We are calling La Jolla a ‘melted' tri-sole. You will see the three sections that are slow-milled and lightly brushed on the sole. But running your fingers over the surface, you’ll feel the delicate transitions from each section to the next.
Even more time was spent on the top line thickness and radius, giving La Jolla a more vintage look. The back bumpers are slimmed and the overall design focus is on the delicate tri-sole. As always, hours were spent slow machining the head so that in its final finished state it would celebrate the incredible process used to create its shape. Once completed, the head is then hand-polished to produce a depth and luster that is unrivaled. The La Jolla face is milled with our Ultra Fine Double Fly cut, yielding the audial and visual feedback we sought.
La Jolla is designed for the modern game, weighing in at a contemporary 350 grams. The sole is minimally engraved with simply the model name, La Jolla, filled with Candy Red paint. We’ve paired it with a special Toulon Lamkin Deep Etched Cord grip and our chrome stepless steel shaft.
The rest of the graphic package was also kept minimal. We wanted to celebrate the beauty and simplicity of the putter’s design, and focus on the incredible feats of greatness that occurred on the cliffs. The circle fist pump icon in the back cavity pays homage to the many celebrations, while the Toulon brand mark is subdued and left unfilled.
Inspired by the player that popularised this design, the top line is adorned with a simple sight dot and the head is finished in our Tour Satin Mist.
This is the all-new Small Batch La Jolla — a celebration of greatness and achievement.
