SMALL BATCH SCOTTSDALE
One of the great golf cities in America, Scottsdale and its surrounding area is home to over 200 golf courses. It's no coincidence Scottsdale is also the home of many active Tour professionals. Scottsdale and neighbouring Phoenix is also where some of the game's most innovative designs came to life - notably from Karsten Solheim and other gifted golf club designers.
This Small Batch release celebrates all things Scottsdale and features a very unique design that also takes inspiration from the town itself - the most Wild city of the West, home to gunslingers and American outlaws.
The Head
This ear shaped mid-mallet does take some inspiration from the original blade models from the 1960s, most notably in the hosel design that is unique on a shape like Scottsdale Small Batch. This modified H1 hosel was designed to create a blade-like flow similar to those models from the 60s. Most designs of this nature are heel shafted, which creates a lost more toe hang, and are typically suited for players with substantial arcs to their strokes.
Scottsdale will fit a wide range of players and do so while delivering an incredibly solid sound and feel. The result is a beautifully sculpted design that flows beautifully in your stroke. An the word 'flow' was what we keyed in on as we created this design.
The Flange and Flow
While the hosel really helps to create the performance of this design, the star of the show on Scottsdale is its flange design. The flange gently flows off the back of the topline, gracefully falling to the back curved surface. But it also flows up from the heel of the flange to a peak towards the toe in a stunning radius.
This functional design helps to locate the center of gravity in the middle of the putter — offsetting the weight of the hosel in the heel — in an artistic expression.
This concept of form and function is on display throughout the valley of the Sonoran Desert in much of Scottsdale’s Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture, and inspired us in our thinking for Scottsdale Small Batch.
The pattern that adorns the flange of Scottsdale features hundreds of tiny diamonds that reflect light in many directions, effectively reducing any glare that could distract a player while also creating a beautiful surface on the 904L Stainless Steel.
This pattern takes hours to mill on every head, and creates a finished piece that is truly unique.
The Sole
We leaned into Wild Wild West inspiration for the sole design — and once again, the key design feature is one of function first. Scottsdale uses a bullet sole to reduce head weight from the center of the head, creating a more forgiving design while also helping us hit our target weight of 355 grams. And it felt fitting for a bullet sole to reside on the sole of a putter inspired by outlaws.
Scottsdale, and broadly Arizona, was part of the Wild Wild West. This led us to study some of the intricate engraving on vintage pistols and knives from the late 1800s and early 1900s often found on cowboys and vigilantes roaming the desert. These patterns were beautifully detailed and the source of inspiration of Scottsdale’s sole.
The graphic package we created was also from this time period and draws inspiration from vintage movie posters and most wanted bulletins. Underneath the graphics you’ll also see the subtle slow milled pattern that helps to make our Small Batch designs so special.
The Rest of the Package
Scottsdale's face is milled with our Ultra Fine Double Fly cut, yielding the audial and visual feedback we sought.
The head is finished in Milk Chocolate and the engravings are filled in Cream and Gold paint. We've paired it with a special Toulon Pistol Midsize grip in a coordinating Black and Rose Gold colour with our chrome stepless steel shaft.
Scottsdale Small Batch - if you're going to make it in the Wild Wild West, you'd better have good aim.
